As America prepares to celebrate its 250th birthday in 2026, Fairfield County joins communities across Ohio in honoring the people, places, creativity, and stories that have shaped the nation. From historic canal towns and aviation heritage to public art, museums, festivals, and outdoor recreation, this milestone year offers a chance to experience Fairfield County through history and celebration.
Whether planning a weekend getaway or exploring close to home, visitors will find America 250 woven throughout the county in meaningful and memorable ways.
Across Fairfield County, themed statewide trails help tell that story. Along the Ohio Creativity Trail, visitors can explore the Ohio Glass Museum, Gay Fad Studios, and the Decorative Arts Center of Ohio—each reflecting the county’s tradition of artistic innovation and craftsmanship. On Ohio’s Air & Space Trail, the Historic Aircraft Squadron brings aviation history to life through restored warbirds, vehicles and military equipment.
Fairfield County is also part of the Transportation Trail, which highlights the many ways people and ideas have moved through the region over time. Stops along this trail include the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame and the Lancaster Soap Box Derby, both celebrating innovation, competition, and transportation history in unique and iconic ways.
Fairfield County’s landscape also tells the story of early transportation and growth. Along the Lake Erie to Ohio River Trail and Fairfield County Canal Heritage Trail, visitors can explore Buckeye Lake State Park, Lockville Canal Park, Millersport’s Deep Cut, Bibler Lock, and the Baltimore Community Museum—each offering insight into how Ohio’s canal system helped move people, goods, and ideas across a growing nation.
Throughout 2026, communities across the county will host exhibits, public art installations, heritage programming, and special events tied to America 250. Fairfield County also participates in the statewide Murals Across Ohio program, showcasing public local art and highlighting local identity, history, and creativity.

Community Celebration Highlights
Fairfield County Community Picnic
July 22, 2026
The Fairfield County Community Picnic brings residents and visitors together in downtown Lancaster to celebrate America’s 250th birthday. The day includes family-friendly games, live music from the Lancaster High School Percussion Ensemble during Lancaster Festival’s Noon at the Square, food vendors, downtown dining, and free lemonade. Guests are invited to bring a blanket, enjoy a relaxed summer afternoon, and take part in the community celebration.
Lancaster Patriotic Decorating Contest
Voting: June 1 – July 4, 2026
Patriotic displays will be showcased throughout Lancaster during the contest, and visitors are encouraged to vote for their favorite decorated homes and storefronts.

Bandstand Time Capsule Event
Following the 4th of July Parade on July 4, 2026, join Fairfield Heritage, Lancaster City Parks, Destination Downtown Lancaster, and Visit Fairfield County at the Bandstand in Zane Square (1:30–2:30 PM). The event will open the 1976 time capsule and bury a new 2026 capsule for future generations. The program includes a formal proclamation, historic displays, and remarks from Larry Smith, one of the original Bandstand builders.
Ohio Goes to the Movies
Fairfield County is part of the statewide Ohio Goes to the Movies initiative celebrating Ohio’s impact on film and storytelling. Local 2026 screenings include:

Heritage Tree Planting
On April 28, America 250 Ohio and Fairfield County dedicated a white oak tree at the Fairfield County Fairgrounds as part of the Heritage Tree Program. The tree and surrounding grounds were recognized as historically significant, creating a living symbol of remembrance and community pride for future generations.
