Description
This mural was designed to be a permanent memorial to veterans at the Fairfield County Visitation Center at 227 E. Main Street.
The mural features a variety of items related to veterans, including a poppy (the military memorial flower), bunting, a veterans burial flag, the U.S. and Ohio flags, and a list of all branches of the military. The mural also highlights the dog tags of a Lancaster native, Army Sgt. Joey Collette, who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2019.
The mural, commissioned by the Fairfield County Commissioners, was designed and painted by artists Jonathan Remoquillo and Jason Annecy. Because the building dates back to the 1880s, the artists chose to reference ghost signs and use the same styles of lettering and depiction of items as would have been used at that time. Their hope is that the mural has a timeless feel, and the artwork can age gracefully along with the building.
