Description

“A 1797 Afternoon at a Tavern on Zane’s Trace” | A Reenactment at Smeck Park
The year is 1797. John Adam’s was just elected president and will take office in March. Northwest Territory and the Ohio region is seeing an influx of settlement which will undoubtedly lead to a call for statehood in just a few years.
It is cold January afternoon when travelers gather at an inn on Zane’s Trace. Some need lodging for the night. Lively games, gambling, and heated political debates will take the chill from the air as they wait for a hot meal provided by the proprietor. Common fare might be a boiled meat and vegetable main course or perhaps roasted fresh game, breads, and on rare occasions, a sweet course of cakes or preserved fruits.
Experience this historical reenactment. Step back in time, become a traveler and visit ‘the tavern.’ Watch cooking over an open fire and play some tavern games.
Note: The cooking is for demonstration purposes only; food is not served during this event.
Where to Meet: Come to Cruit House, the log-framed house seen upon entering the park. Come anytime during the program. Reminder: Pets are not allowed inside the building.
