Description
Since 1832, this amazing mansion with a double curved front brick wall and 2-story portico with fluted Ionic columns has been a Lancaster landmark. The distinctive structure embodies both Federal and Greek Revival styles, and it exemplifies outstanding 19th-century American craftsmanship. Throughout the house, 12-foot ceilings draw attention to stunning woodwork, archways, and chandeliers. The Georgian's exquisite furnishings include many fine pieces by Fairfield County cabinet makers and artisans. Visitors will marvel at the unique collections of silver, quilts, musical instruments, dollhouses, antique miniatures, and carved figures by folk artist Elijah Pierce. The Gift Shop offers local history books, jewelry and pottery by regional artisans, and much more.

Sherman Trail: Built in 1832 by Daniel Sifford for one of the most successful entrepreneurs of the area, Samuel Maccracken, and his wife Sarah. Samuel arrived in Lancaster about the same time as Charles Sherman. Charles Sherman often did legal work for Samuel Maccracken. This home would have been built while Sherman was living with the Ewings. The population of the town doubled during this decade as Maccracken helped bring the canal to Lancaster.
Samuel and Sarah's sons, John and James, attended school with the Sherman and Ewing children.
