Kayak the Historic Canal in Millersport

Description

Experience one of Ohio’s most unique and peaceful paddling adventures along a rare navigable stretch of the historic Ohio & Erie Canal in Millersport. This easy-to-access waterway combines serene paddling with rich local history and scenic charm, making it ideal for families, beginners, and seasoned kayakers alike.

As you glide through this preserved canal, you’ll encounter a diverse landscape—lakeside homes, charming businesses, and lush natural areas that feel surprisingly remote. Much of the route is quiet and tree-lined, offering a wilderness-like experience just steps from the heart of town.

One of the highlights is the Deep Cut area, a striking, hand-dug section from the 1830s where canal workers carved through solid earth to maintain a navigable route. Though unmarked, it’s an impressive reminder of the human effort behind Ohio’s early infrastructure.

Further along, kayakers can enjoy a peaceful view of the Millersport Cemetery, perched just above the canal—a quiet and reflective moment in your journey.

Wildlife is abundant in the more secluded stretches, with frequent sightings of herons, turtles and fish. Whether you launch from Brooks Park or connect from the Buckeye Lake Dam Trail at Lieb’s Island, there are plenty of ways to explore the canal at your own pace.
