Richard Outcault’s Comic Strip Mural

Richard Felten Outcault (January 14, 1863 – September 25, 1928) was an American cartoonist who was a native of Lancaster. Early in his career, he developed all the technical drawings for Thomas Edison. He is best known for creating the series The Yellow Kid and Buster Brown, and is considered a key pioneer of the modern comic strip.

This mural is located on the south side of the building, facing Wheeling Street.

On October 3, 2022, Fairfield Heritage Association accepted a plaque from the Society of Professional Journalists and E.W. Scripps School of Journalism that recognizes Lancaster, Ohio as an Ohio Historic Site in Journalism for being the birthplace of Richard Outcault. Outcault is known as the father of the comic strip.
