History of Millersport, Ohio

The Beginning

The community of Millersport, Ohio was founded in 1825 by Mathias Miller as a port of trade on the Ohio-Erie Canal. In the waning days of another nearby canal-town called Monticello, Mathias brought his family along with some new other settlers only about a mile to the present location where Millersport continues to prosper today. Monticello has disappeared completely but combined with the sovereignty of God, the perseverance through the decades, and creative initiative of its residents, Millersport has done more than survived, it has flourished.

Millersport is a very beautiful community with Buckeye Lake to the east and rural farms throughout the surrounding area. A well preserved portion of the Ohio-Erie Canal cuts through the center of town enhancing the colorful picturesque community which its approximately 1200 citizens.

On Buckeye Lake

Millersport is located in the northeast corner of Fairfield County in central Ohio. It rests on the south and west banks of Buckeye Lake, an extremely popular resort area in the central Ohio region. Originally a swamp call Buffalo Licks by the early pioneers, it was cleared and became known as the Licking Reservoir. Its primary function was to supply water to the canal. Later the name was changed to Buckeye Lake as it became one of the most popular family resort areas in al of Ohio’s history.

Today, Millersport and Buckeye Lake are still thriving and are quite popular. The lake and surrounding parks cover 3,557 acres. There is boating (unlimited horsepower), sailing, canoeing, browbeating, fishing, hunting, picnicking and swimming in the summer months. In the winter the lake offers ice skating, snowmobiling, ice fishing, and motorcycle racing on the ice.
